Help us to better support multicultural communities, clients and staff

You’re invited to have your say to inform the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Multicultural Plan 2022-2025.

The NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) presents new opportunities to collaborate and engage with multicultural communities.

This consultation is an important step to improve the way that DCJ supports communities, clients and staff from multicultural backgrounds. We want to hear from community members and organisations working with multicultural communities to help inform the DCJ Multicultural Plan.

Thank you for telling us what you think

Our thanks to each of you who gave your time and ideas. We're reviewing the feedback received in support of efforts to develop the DCJ Multicultural Plan 2022-2025.

With your input, we aim to:

  • hear your suggestions on how we can improve our response to your community
  • give your community a voice and make sure we reflect what communities see as important
  • understand how your community experiences DCJ services
  • make sure our work is focused in the right areas, and is culturally inclusive
  • improve existing strategies, policies and programs
  • create an effective and achievable DCJ Multicultural Plan.

  • The Multicultural Plan is ready

Your input helped shape the DCJ Multicultural Plan 2022 – 2025. Thank you.

Nine main themes come from the feedback that communities and organisations gave. We are asked to:

    1. improve access to Information and Language Services
    2. be more consistently culturally safe and religiously sensitive
    3. further develop the cultural competence of people who provide services on our behalf and our staff
    4. build and train up community leaders
    5. fund multicultural services and programs for longer
    6. better coordinate and communicate across DCJ and NSW Government
    7. have more diversity in our leadership
    8. better care for children and young people
    9. improve what you think of us.

The DCJ Multicultural Plan 2022 – 2025 is a framework to embed in our work multicultural principles that are part of the law in New South Wales.

At DCJ, we want equity in our communities and justice system and to see and serve cultural and language needs as we develop policy and plan and deliver services to you.

The plan includes targets and strategies that we’ll measure and report on each year. This will help us to better serve all communities in our state, through:

    • accessible services for people from diverse backgrounds
    • modern, high quality programs and services
    • our understanding of community needs in our work
    • building our communities and workforce.
  • Thank you for your interest and input

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to contribute ideas in support of developing the DCJ Multicultural Plan 2022-2025.
We're reviewing the feedback that has been received. For more information on next steps, email the Multicultural Policy and Engagement Team.
