Overview
Project overview
The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will be the biggest upgrade of the hospital in over 26 years and will ensure the facility is able to respond to the health needs of the growing community. The redevelopment will provide patients and staff with access to the latest facilities and enable the dedicated health staff to continue delivering high-quality care.
Scope
Project scope
In response to the Clinical Services Plan, new and increased health services and facilities have been identified as priorities for the redevelopment, including:
- a new expanded and enhanced Intensive Care Unit
- new purpose built adult in-patient accommodation
- expanded and enhanced Emergency Department
- additional surgical theatres
- enhanced and expanded antenatal facilities
- additional ambulatory and outpatient care capacity
- other clinical and non-clinical enhancements to existing and retained facilities, to support changing models of care
- improved accessibility to the campus, including internal access, urban spaces, landscaping and wayfinding.
The redevelopment will also maximise the capacity of existing facilities available at the Canterbury Hospital campus, including the main hospital building and the Canterbury Health Centre.
Status
Project status
Following the release of the master plan and key clinical priorities in February 2025, planning for the redevelopment is continuing through the early design stages.
Currently in the concept design phase, the project is taking a collaborative approach with clinicians, staff, patients, consumers and the local community to ensure the redevelopment meets the healthcare needs of the growing population.
Staff and community members are invited to provide feedback on the early designs. This input will help shape a facility that supports high-quality care and reflects the needs and expectations of the diverse community it serves.

3D Block and Stack
The block and stack diagram is a tool used to visually represent the layout of the hospital’s departments and services, showcasing their location and relationship to one another. This process helps inform how the hospital will be arranged, to ensure departments and services are placed in a way that supports operations and clinical flow.
