Status
Project status
The schematic design for the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, the second step in the three-stage design process, is complete. This phase developed the layout of each department in greater detail, building on the initial concepts.
The project has commenced the final stage of design, known as detailed design, which finalises the detail of each room and confirms the project scope.
To keep works progressing on the redevelopment, the project will undergo a staged planning approval process and be assessed under a Review of Environmental Factors (REF); one for Early Works and one for Main Works.
The Early Works REF planning application includes:
- Internal fleet carpark modifications
- Relocation and upgrades of in-ground services
- Building a new exterior plant room
- Minor tree removal
- Establishment of work zone and amenities
The Early Works REF was lodged on 20 November 2025, and was on public exhibition for 28 days, allowing staff and the community to review the application and provide feedback.
Submissions closed at 11.59pm on 18 December 2025.
The planning application for the project’s main works is expected to be submitted in early-mid 2026.
Consultation
Consultation
The Early Works planning application was open for public exhibition from 20 November until 18 December 2025.
People could view the project’s Review of Environmental Factors (REF) report and supporting documents which were prepared to assess the potential benefits and environmental impacts of the project. The exhibition period was supported with in-person information sessions, held at the hospital and in the community. In-language support was available at multiple sessions, ensuring everyone was able to learn more about the project and ask questions.
The projects main works planning application will be on public exhibition in the coming months with in-person, online and in-language sessions available. The consultation calendar will be released via our website, our newsletters and media channels.
Ongoing consultation
Residents, staff and key stakeholders across Canterbury and surrounding suburbs will continue to be consulted throughout the redevelopment to ensure the hospital meets the needs of the diverse communities in the area. Consultation will occur through community and hospital pop-up sessions, presentations, in-language information, consumer groups, project user groups, surveys and more.

2D Block and Stack
The block and stack diagram is a tool used to visually represent the layout of the hospital’s departments and services, showcasing their location and relationship to one another. This process helps inform how the hospital will be arranged, to ensure departments and services are placed in a way that supports operations and clinical flow.
