Project overview

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will be the biggest upgrade of the hospital in over 26 years and will ensure the facility is able to respond to the health needs of the growing community. The redevelopment will provide patients and staff with access to the latest facilities and enable the dedicated health staff to continue delivering high-quality care.

Project scope

In response to the Clinical Services Plan, new and increased health services and facilities have been identified as priorities for the redevelopment, including:

  • a new expanded and enhanced Intensive Care Unit
  • new purpose built adult in-patient accommodation
  • expanded and enhanced Emergency Department
  • additional surgical theatres
  • enhanced and expanded antenatal facilities
  • additional ambulatory and outpatient care capacity
  • other clinical and non-clinical enhancements to existing and retained facilities, to support changing models of care
  • improved accessibility to the campus, including internal access, urban spaces, landscaping and wayfinding.

The redevelopment will also maximise the capacity of existing facilities available at the Canterbury Hospital campus, including the main hospital building and the Canterbury Health Centre.

    Project status

In February 2025, the master plan for the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment was launched. The master plan identifies key priorities and strategies that will define the hospital’s transformation.

The lead design team, appointed in March 2024, will continue to work with Health Infrastructure and Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) in determining the key clinical service priorities to inform the ongoing planning for the redevelopment.

Following completion of the master plan, the project team will continue with detailed planning to inform the concept design for the redevelopment.

The full scope of the project and indicative timing of the works will be finalised during planning and design.  Staff, stakeholders, and the community will be updated as the project progresses with further consultation to continue throughout 2025.

    Master plan outline

Residents, staff and key stakeholders across Canterbury and surrounding suburbs will continue to be consulted throughout the redevelopment to ensure the hospital meets the needs of the diverse communities in the area. Consultation will occur through community and hospital pop-up sessions, presentations, in-language information, consumer groups, project user groups, surveys and more.

Master planning sets the vision for the redevelopment and explores a variety of project options that address the Clinical Services Plan. The site is analysed and strategies are developed for a range of potential building, infrastructure, space and land use. The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment team conducted a survey, asking staff, patients, visitors and the community to provide feedback on what they would like to be considered as part of the redevelopment. With more than 250 responses, the feedback will help shape the future of Canterbury Hospital and has directly informed the redevelopment’s master plan.

Key themes that emerged included green spaces and access to natural light; updated amenities for staff, patients and carers; improved accessibility, clear signage and wayfinding; and increased patient and visitor parking.

This feedback will help shape a facility that supports the growing needs of the diverse community. View further outcomes in the fact sheet below.
