About the project
The new $540 million Integrated Mental Health Complex (IMHC) at Westmead will deliver new therapeutic environments that support safe, dignified, trauma-informed recovery and focused care. The new facilities have been designed with consumers and staff to promote recovery and reduce stress for everyone who stays, visits or works there.
The IMHC will be located close to the new Block K (new main building) at Westmead, and will include connections to the main entry, adult emergency and psychiatric emergency care.
The new building will include:
- Acute mental health beds including beds for youth, adolescents, adults, older persons and people living with eating disorders
- Mental health intensive care and high dependency units
- A mental health assessment area
- Sub and non-acute mental health beds
- Multidisciplinary ambulatory and outpatient services.
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land upon which our hospital is built, the Burramattagal people of the Dharug Nation.
Westmead Hospital is the principal referral hospital for western Sydney, renowned for its comprehensive, highly specialised and complex services provided to its community, statewide and nationally.
The new IMHC will connect to the main hospital (Block K), main entry, and Emergency Department via a dedicated link bridge. From the main entry, there is easy access to retail amenities and the future light rail. The main entry is within easy walking distance on Westmead Station and bus stops.
A significant expansion to children's health services in western Sydney will see the construction of a new clinical building and multi-storey car park to serve the existing and expanded Children’s Hospital, ensuring that young people continue to receive safe, high quality care that helps them live their healthiest lives.
The new Paediatric Services Building will provide new and expanded critical care and acute healthcare services and will include:
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
- Cancer services
- Operating theatres
- Cardiac catheterisation and interventional laboratories
- Pharmacy
- Additional inpatient units.
The new Paediatric Services Building will connect with the new Emergency Department, medical imaging and short stay unit delivered through Stage 1 of the redevelopment.
