The NSW Government is extending portable long service leave to community service workers to encourage them to stay in the sector longer.

Feedback received through Have Your Say consultation helped shape the new:

We received 939 pieces of feedback as surveys, stories and submissions, which helped inform the new Act and Regulation.

New portable long service scheme from 1 July 2025

Portable long service entitlements will allow workers in the community services industry to access paid long service leave based on how long they have been employed in the sector, rather than how long they have worked for a single employer.

Under the Community Services Industry portable long service scheme, workers:

  • become eligible after 7 years in the industry with one or more employers
  • can claim up to 6 weeks' long service leave
  • can take the leave all at once, or in blocks.
