Schematic Design Consultation

Schematic design is a key phase where floor plans and layouts for clinical departments and key spaces start to take shape. We invite staff, patients, carers, and community members to explore the current floor plans and share your feedback. Your input will help ensure the design supports the needs of the people who use, work in, and rely on Canterbury Hospital every day.

🛏️Inpatient Units

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment project will deliver two additional in-patient units located on Levels 6 and 7 of the future 8-storey hospital building. This component of the redevelopment aims to expand the hospital’s capacity to meet the growing healthcare needs of the local community and support the delivery of contemporary, safe and efficient models of care.

Location: Level 6 and Level 7 of the new clinical services building

🏥Emergency Department

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, the Emergency Department (ED) will be expanded to enhance capacity and support improved models of emergency care delivery. The ED will remain in its current ground floor location and expand towards the north east of the hospital campus to seamlessly connect with the new Intensive Care Unit located on Level 3 of the new hospital building.

👩‍⚕️Operating Theatres

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will deliver an expansion and upgrade of the hospital’s Operating Theatres to support increased surgical capacity, improve patient outcomes, and enhance working environments for surgical teams. The Operating Rooms will remain in their current location on Level 2 of the existing hospital building, with expansion and refurbishment works carried out within and adjacent to the existing footprint.

🤰Women's and Babies Services

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, Women’s and Babies Services will be considered for enhancement to better meet the needs of the growing and diverse local community. The core redevelopment will include the provision of essential maternity and newborn services, with the opportunity for further uplift in scope if additional funding is secured.

🚑Intensive Care Unit

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will be relocated to a purpose-built space on Level 3 of the new Clinical Services Building. The new ICU will be designed to support contemporary models of critical care, provide a safer and more efficient environment for patients and staff, and improve clinical connectivity with key services.

🫀Cardiac Diagnostics

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will include refurbishment works to upgrade Cardiac Diagnostics Services, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality cardiac care within a modernised environment. The works will improve clinical functionality, patient experience, and service capacity to meet growing demand.

Location: Level 3 of the current hospital building.

🩼Ambulatory Care

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, Ambulatory Care Services will undergo refurbishment works within their existing location in the current hospital building. The upgrade will improve the functionality, accessibility, and overall environment of outpatient and day treatment services to support high-quality, patient-centred care.

Location: Level 3 of the current hospital building.

🎓Education

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, existing education spaces will be relocated to enable the expansion of the Emergency Department. The new education facilities will be purpose-built on Level 4 of the new Clinical Services Building, supporting ongoing clinical training, professional development, and staff education in a modern environment.

💻Support spaces

As part of the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, Back-of-House services, Pharmacy, and Pathology may be incorporated into the new Clinical Services Building to enhance operational efficiency and better support clinical service delivery. Subject to final funding and service planning, these services are proposed to be located on Level 4 of the new facility.
