Honouring Country: Dharug Custodian insights shaping hospital redevelopment at Mount Druitt

3 October 2025

Earlier this year, Dharug traditional custodians came together with project teams from Health Infrastructure and Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) to provide invaluable cultural guidance for redevelopment projects within Western Sydney Local Health District. The engagement at Mount Druitt Hospital highlighted the importance of embedding Country, culture, and community into design and planning for new health infrastructure.

The Traditional Custodians emphasised that the hospital is not just a building - it is part of the land, a place of healing deeply connected to Country. At Mount Druitt Hospital, the calm of the area, natural environment and history as a travelling Country, were seen as vital to recognise in the design of the new in-patient unit adjoining the existing building. Protecting native flora and fauna, was a recurring theme, alongside calls to promote the use of native planting over non-native species.

Design elements were encouraged that reflect the landscape and cultural stories and Traditional Custodians advocated for muted, earthy colours in keeping with Country. Ideas for art and wayfinding that honour heritage and engage families and children in interactive ways were also discussed to create a welcoming environment for all.

The new Aboriginal Family Lounge being planned for Mount Druitt Hospital was a key focal point, with feedback supporting native planting externally, access to outdoor space, and activities for all ages. Traditional Custodians also emphasised the need for private grieving spaces and culturally safe environments.

This engagement reaffirmed the importance of continuing to walk together with Aboriginal communities and embedding Aboriginal voices and stories into the heart of health infrastructure. The insights shared are helping to shape the architectural design of the new building, and redevelopment spaces at Mount Druitt Hospital to ensure the spaces are not only functional but respectful of Country, culture, and community.
