Conversations at Mount Druitt Hospital - what we heard

11 June 2025

Thank you to the community and Mount Druitt Hospital staff members who joined the project team on Thursday, 22 May to learn more about the extension of Mount Druitt Hospital.

The project team enjoyed hearing the stories from the community about the rich history of the hospital planning and early operation. Some of our attendees reminisced about the original plans for hospital in the late 1970s, with the Mount Druitt Hospital opening in 1982. It was clear that Mount Druitt Hospital has a special place in the heart of the local community it has been serving for over 4 decades.

Overwhelmingly, people voiced their support for bringing additional beds to Mount Druitt allowing more services to be provided at the local community hospital, reducing the need for medical and surgical transfers to other facilities. We also heard about significant aspects of the hospital’s identity and history including the ‘spaceship’ façade, with attendees keen to ensure the hospital maintains its welcoming and open feel.

Staff members reflected a keen interest in ensuring hospital services remain supported for the local community, as well as close management during the expansion to avoid disruption to services – which the team is dedicated to ensuring.

Hearing from community members and staff is important in designing and planning the new extension, and we want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who attended and shared their stories and thoughts. We will continue to keep the community updated on the next steps as plans progress.
