Transport for NSW is seeking feedback on the Wollongong Station Precinct draft Master Plan
The plan provides a framework for future renewal and place-making projects at the train station and its immediate surrounds.
Project overview
The Wollongong Station Precinct draft Master Plan is a long-term vision for transforming the station area into a vibrant, connected and inviting hub that reflects the unique identity of Wollongong. You can read the draft Master Plan in full below, or a summary on the proposed improvements tab.
Enhancing the health precinct connection
This draft Master Plan has been developed with the Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy prepared by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and Wollongong Hospital future planning by NSW Health to create an integrated and accessible health precinct.
Proposed improvements
Proposed improvements
To achieve this vision, the master plan focuses on four key improvements:
Crown Street gateway
- The development of a concourse over the existing rail line that you enter via a large open plaza on Crown Street would establish a safer and more user-friendly ‘front door’ to and from the station
- Buildings next to the station would combine retail, dining and public amenities, improving the look and feel of the area and promoting economic activity

Station Street gateway
- Station Street would be a space for pedestrians to move around and to rest and wait, with open green spaces and end of trip facilities
- Adjustments to bus and vehicle flow would reduce congestion and improve safety

Gladstone Avenue gateway
- Gladstone Avenue would serve as a space for multimodal transport access, with an expanded station forecourt and improved pedestrian connectivity

Opportunity sites
- Opportunity sites around the precinct would unlock growth through long-term redevelopment options
- For example, redeveloping the current multi-storey carpark on Gladstone Avenue into a mixed-use building as private car trips to the station become less common

Station to Hospital
- Opportunities for footpath upgrades, landscaping and safety measures to improve the walkability of Crown Street between the station and the hospital
- Improved active transport links to encourage sustainable travel between the station and key health facilities
