What is Truth Telling?
In 2023, the NSW Department of Education commenced a formal process to document its role and impact on Aboriginal culture and educational outcomes for Aboriginal people in NSW. This is referred to as Truth Telling and is an important part of our reconciliation journey.
To assist with this process, the department commissioned the University of Newcastle to conduct archival research and oral history interviews with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This will be completed towards the end of 2024.
The aim of this consultation is to gain your feedback on:
- the premise of truth-telling research
- appropriate ways to keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities informed
- your participation in research
- community accessibility and access to research findings
- identification of additional key community members of stakeholders.
Tell us what you think
Your feedback will help inform how the NSW Department of Education should acknowledge the findings of the research, the action it should take in response to the findings and how the research should be used to educate others.
You can have your say by attending a community consultation workshop, completing the survey and/or uploading a submission.

Community consultation workshops
The department will be undertaking community consultation workshops to understand how to best engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members into the research and provide culturally safe supports throughout the process. Feedback from this process will also be used to guide the future use of the research by the department.
