The Department of Communities and Justice is seeking feedback on a legislated framework for regulating the use of restrictive practices on people with disability.
The aim of the proposed framework is to reduce and, where possible, eliminate the use of restrictive practices.
Restrictive practices are actions or interventions that restrict the rights or freedom of movement of a person to change a behaviour which is likely to place the physical safety of the person or others in serious jeopardy.
Examples of restrictive practices include using a certain medication (not related to illness) to influence a person's behaviour, or restricting areas a person can access.
The Department of Communities and Justice has released a Consultation Paper seeking your feedback about key parts of the proposed framework.
Tell us what you think
You can provide feedback by filling out a submission form or uploading a submission until 5pm Friday 28 February 2025.
If you would like to provide feedback in another way, please:
- Email: policy@dcj.nsw.gov.au to provide written or audio file feedback
- Speak to a staff member by emailing: policy@dcj.nsw.gov.au to arrange a conversation
- Post your written feedback to: Locked Bag 5000, Parramatta, NSW, 2124
An Easy Read summary of the Consultation Paper will be available in the New Year.
There will also be a survey aimed at people with disability who have experienced restrictive practices and another survey aimed at their families, carers, guardians and any other supporters.
Your feedback will help inform the NSW Government as to whether to pursue the reform.
