Help shape the 2031 Road Safety Action Plan

Every death and serious injury on our roads have a lasting impact on families, communities and the wider NSW community. While decades of road safety initiatives have saved thousands of lives, road trauma remains a serious concern — particularly as our population grows, travel patterns change and more vehicles use our roads.

Transport for NSW is developing the 2031 Road Safety Action Plan to guide action over the next 5 years. The 2031 Plan will build on progress to date and outline practical steps to reduce deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads, supporting the NSW Government’s Towards Zero goal of zero road trauma by 2050.

We are seeking community and stakeholder feedback to help inform the actions included in the 2031 Plan.

To support development of the 2031 Plan, a statewide Community Attitudes Survey has been conducted to understand what road safety issues matter most to NSW road users.

Recent findings show:

  • Strong and growing support (87%) for the goal of zero road trauma by 2050.
  • Ongoing concern about drink driving (60%), speeding (57%), driver distraction (48%) and drug driving (40%).
  • High support for measures such as lowering the legal blood alcohol limit (82%), fixed average speed cameras for light vehicles (77%) and mobile average speed cameras with warning signs (76%).

The 2031 Plan will outline priority actions across key areas, including:

  • creating safe and vibrant urban places across NSW
  • creating safer high speed roads
  • increasing the safety of vehicles and protective equipment
  • improving safety for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, older and younger users
  • increasing safe road user behaviour
  • strengthening road safety outcomes for Aboriginal communities

These focus areas have been informed by crash data, system performance analysis and community research, and reflect both statewide trends and regional challenges.

We are consulting on proposed priority action areas that have been developed using crash data, trauma modelling, system performance analysis and community research.

We want to understand:

  • whether the proposed priorities reflect the issues you see in your community
  • what is working well
  • where further action is needed
  • barriers or challenges to improving safety
  • additional ideas or local insights that could strengthen the 2031 Plan.

Your feedback will help shape the actions included in the 2031 Road Safety Action Plan.

How you can get involved

You can contribute by:
