The State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) is seeking your input on the revised Guidelines for workplace return to work programs (the Guidelines).

All employers in NSW are required to have a workplace return to work (RTW) program to describe how they will support a worker to recover following a workplace injury.

SIRA has updated the Guidelines to make it easier for employers to understand their obligations and for workers to access information they need.

The main changes include:

  • removing obligations that aren't a requirement of the Guidelines; and
  • additional content to provide greater clarity about expectations of employers and providing supporting information as a standalone document - How to comply with the Guidelines for workplace return to work programs ('How to comply with the Guidelines').

It is anticipated these changes will reduce confusion and ensure employers can focus on assisting workers to recover at work following a workplace injury.

Your feedback will help us determine if we have the balance right between simplifying the information and providing clarity about how employers can meet their RTW program obligations.

Tell us what you think

Please read the draft Guidelines, 'How to comply with the Guidelines' document and the summary of proposed changes before completing the submission and/or survey. You can have your say until 11.59pm on Friday 27 February 2026.

We will use your feedback to assist in finalising the Guidelines and the 'How to comply with the Guidelines' information.
