Project update

Thank you for providing feedback

Transport gathered community feedback on the project via the ‘Have Your Say’ webpage, during community drop-in sessions, at community meetings and by talking with local residents about how they access the highway.

You can read the full update on the findings in the Community Update,

We received comments about:

  • Road safety and environmental impacts
  • Local roads accessing the highway
  • Active transport and traffic congestion
  • Safety issues at the current Hawken Road and Jervis Bay Road intersections
  • Access for other local roads and private properties

There was support for:

  • The upgrade of the Jervis Bay Road intersection (neighbouring project in construction)
  • Inclusion of two lanes in each direction along the upgraded highway to ease traffic congestion
  • Wildlife crossings and underpasses

Concerns included:

  • Vegetation clearing impacts
  • Water runoff and drainage
  • Active transport provisions
  • Inclusion of more signage to highlight local and regional destinations
  • The scale of the Hawken Road intersection

The updated design includes changes to the Princes Highway intersection at Hawken Road, Tomerong. The refined design will connect Blackbutt Range Road and Hawken Road via an underpass, instead of an overpass as shown in the initial design.

The changes will reduce the interchange’s overall footprint as well as the amount of vegetation clearing required, while maintaining the ability to safely perform all traffic movements through the intersection.

The design helps to minimise visual impacts and preserves landscape views to the east and west for motorists. The introduction of wildlife connectivity measures will minimise wildlife impacts.

The Jervis Bay Road to Hawken Road upgrade project is part of the Princes Highway upgrade program which aims to deliver safer and more reliable journeys along the Princes Highway on the NSW South Coast. The project includes upgrading six kilometres of the existing highway between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road to two lanes in each direction, separated by a median barrier to improve safety. It also includes an intersection upgrade at Hawken Road, Tomerong.

The $500 million upgrade, funded by the Australian and NSW governments, has been prioritised as the first stage of the 20-kilometre Princes Highway upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road. The remainder of the upgrade from Hawken Road to Sussex Inlet Road will be delivered at a later stage.

Project benefits include:

• Improve transport network resilience

• Improve traffic efficiency and connectivity

• Support sustainability of the region

• Improve freight access and efficiency

• Respect our community and environment

• Improve network safety for all Transport customers

• Enable an increase in the use of active and public transport.

The Princes Highway and Hawken Road intersection:

The Princes Highway and Hawken Road intersection will be an S-type grade-separated intersection (overpass) connecting Hawken Road to Blackbutt Range Road. The upgraded intersection will allow for all traffic movements and provide east-west connectivity between these two roads. The key benefit of this option is a smaller footprint compared to traditional grade-separated intersections, which means fewer impacts to property and valuable ecological lands. It also provides safe movements onto and off the Princes Highway.
