NSW Regional Health Plan

Help us plan the future of regional health in NSW.

We are developing the new Regional Health Plan 2022-2032 to guide the strategic focus of NSW Health to better serve rural, regional and remote communities across NSW for the next ten years.

The draft plan has been informed by our previous work and what we have heard from key stakeholders.

So far there has been 68 consultation sessions with 1,600 people across NSW as well as more than 2,000 surveys completed. Experiences and insight from stakeholders from across the health sector have also been drawn upon to develop key priorities. This includes local health staff, councils, Primary Health Networks (PHNs), professional associations, training organisations, non-government organisations, ACCHO, community organisation, charities, affiliated organisations and healthcare providers, volunteers, community members, carers, consumers.

‘Regional’ includes all rural, regional, and remote areas of NSW. It includes areas within the rural and regional local health districts and Albury/Wodonga Health: Central Coast, Far West, Hunter New England, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Mid North Coast, Murrumbidgee, Northern NSW, Southern NSW, Western NSW. Some areas of other local health districts may also be considered regional for the purpose of this plan, such as South Western Sydney and Nepean Blue Mountains.

This draft framework provides an overview of the 10-year deliverables and goals which will improve regional health outcomes.

  • NSW Regional Health Strategic Plan 2022-2032

The NSW Regional Health Strategic Plan for 2022-2032 is specific to regional, rural and remote communities and will guide NSW Health’s strategic focus for the next 10 years. The plan is a roadmap for the future provision of health services that understands, and celebrates, the diverse and unique nature of regional communities.

The plan’s vision is: a sustainable, equitable and integrated health system delivering outcomes that matter most to patients and the community in regional, rural and remote NSW.

The Regional Health Strategic Plan identifies six strategic priorities to:

    • strengthen the regional workforce
    • enable better access to safe, high quality and timely health services
    • keep people healthy and well through prevention and education
    • keep communities informed, building engagement, seeking feedback
    • expand integration of primary, community and hospital care
    • harness and evaluate innovation to support a sustainable health system.

The plan aligns closely with Future Health: guiding the next decade of care in NSW 2022-2032(External link) which provides the strategic framework and priorities for the whole system over the next 10 years. Continued collaboration and alignment of the plan with Future Health will lead to shared outcomes that improve regional health services and health outcomes for people living in regional, rural and remote NSW.

The plan also addresses issues raised in the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into health outcomes and access to health and hospital services in rural, regional and remote NSW.

A Priority Framework has also been developed for the first three years of the plan. This document describes some of the targets and current investment and initiatives that support the plan.

Over the next 10 years the plan will be regularly monitored and reviewed, to ensure effective planning, delivery, reporting and evaluation which is responsive to the needs of regional communities.
