We want your input to develop a model for responding to Triple Zero (000) calls about mental health emergencies in the community.
Currently, a significant number of Triple Zero (000) emergency calls are directed to police to respond. We want to make sure people experiencing a mental health emergency get the right help, at the right time, and from the right service.
There are growing concerns in Australia and internationally about the suitability of police being the primary responders to people experiencing a mental health emergency. Mental health consumers, carers, advocates and peak bodies have advocated for a health-led response with trained health professionals at the forefront, working closely with police when needed, to ensure the person is connected with the right care, at the right time.
The proposed model includes capacity for trained health professionals to provide 24/7 virtual support and referral. In some metropolitan areas, this will include a mobile in-person response for people with more complex needs.
