Name your Australian female sporting hero

Help name a public grandstand at Accor Stadium, Western Sydney's home to the biggest sporting events in the country

Australia has so many inspirational female sporting legends.

The NSW Government wants to recognise their contribution to women’s sport and inspire participation by the next generation of female sporting heroes.

To achieve this, we want your help to name the Eastern Grandstand at Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush. To qualify, your nominee must be an Australian and a female sportsperson.

We want to do it before the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World CupTM being held at the stadium, where the Australian Matildas soccer team will compete on Thursday 20 July!

Tell us what you think

We encourage you to nominate the name of your favourite female Australian sporting hero by 26 May 2023.

You can also share your most inspiring Australian female sporting moment.

  • Michelle Ford one of the youngest Australian to compete at an Olympic Games

by Gail from Sans Souci, 11 days ago

As a local Sans Souci resident I was greatly inspired by our local Olympian Michelle Ford who dedicated her young self to training and working hard with a natural talent for swimming. She trained at the local swimming pool at Carss Park and made her mark on the international stage. At age 12 she began her world beating record as the fastest swimmer for her age. At 13 became one of the youngest swimmers to take part in the Olympic Games. At 16 she held the world record for the 800m freestyle and Commonwealth Games record for 200m Butterfly.

I watched Cathy Freeman at the Olympics and wow what a race it was wonderful to see ,she was amazing and to actually see her in full flight at that stadium on the night of her race is just an amazing memory will never forget it.

  • Cathy Freeman - An outstanding athlete

by Raymond D, 14 days ago

I still get goose bumps when I watch Cathy Freeman win the final of the women's 400m event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Wearing a full bodysuit complete with hood she powered over the finishing line a good three metres in front of her nearest rival, urged on by the cheering of the thousands of spectators watching the event. The pressure on her was enormous but she delivered when it mattered. She was a true champion.

  • 7’s Rugby

    by River, 14 days ago

I believe the women’s gold medal winning performance in the inaugural women’s 7’s at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 where Shannon rose to become a role model for the sport of Rugby at a young age. Now as a matured woman she will be hanging up her boots from the 15 a side game after she leads the Wallaroos onto the park for the last time. There are only a handful of other Australians who have been as successful in playing their sport.

Although there are four tennis majors Wimbledon is generally considered to be the primus inter pares. Having won this Ash Barty retired, thus ending her brief career on top.
  • Ash Barty

by Simon B, 21 days ago
In recent history, there have only been a small number of sporting champions who have gained significant achievements on their sporting field and the prowess and persona that we can all be proud of off the field. Ash Barty is one such sportsperson and her win at Wimbledon in 2021 was both remarkable and inspiring for all Australians.
  • The Great Saturday Hero’s

    by Viv, 21 days ago
What inspires me to think of great Australian sports moments is not the well known sports stars of this country but the true hero’s of sport to me are the youngsters that have a go. These girls try little athletics, netball, hockey, softball, touch , rugby, swimming and soccer to name a few. They are there not for the glitzy prizes and national accolades, they are there for the fun, the fitness, they dont want to let a team down. It might be cold, raining or 40c but these Saturday hero’s are there each week with a smile on their... Continue reading
