Our Bankstown community has been given a ‘first look’ at the new Bankstown Hospital with new plans that show the layout of the new building and multi-storey car park.
Called a concept design, the plans set out where different hospital departments will go, how they relate to each other and how patients, staff and supplies will move around.
Departments that need to be close together will be located close to each other so patients can get the care they need quickly and easily, for example, Birthing and Neonatal (Special Care Nursery) or Emergency and surgery.
The project also includes a new multi-storey car park plus on-ground parking.
The final design and number of car spaces will be confirmed when a builder is appointed.
Construction will start as soon as possible after TAFE NSW relocates in 2026.
This will include demolition and other early works to get the site ready for major construction.
Concept design consultation has now closed.
An update on the design will be shared in early 2027 once all the feedback has been considered.
Hospital layout
This diagram explains what’s on each floor.
This diagram is not to scale but it provides an overview of the hospital layout so you can see how the departments relate to each other.
The site is long and slopes up towards the Hume Highway, so there are ground level entries at levels 0, 1 and 2.
The Emergency Department is at ground level 0 on French Avenue with drop-off and pick-up zones, waiting areas, ambulance bays, security and satellite imaging.
A main foyer on ground level 1 on Chapel Road provides a welcoming entry to the new building with reception, retail and other services.
Outpatient clinics on level 2 have a direct link to the multi-storey car park making it easily accessible for patients and visitors.
This design provides a strong connection to the existing CBD and a welcoming arrival experience on levels 0, 1 and 2.
The two lower levels of the car park building will be used for general services including linen, waste and cleaning services.
Dedicated staff lifts and a staff corridor on every level make it easy to move meals, linen and waste discreetly around the hospital, and provide other 'back of house' services.
Operating theatres, intensive care, kitchens and pathology are in the middle levels of the building for easy access to the wards above and the Emergency Department below.
Patient wards (inpatient units) are located on the upper levels.
Proposed layouts for consultation purposes only
The following diagrams show the proposed layout for each department as of November 2026.
They are for consultation purposes only, so staff and community can help us identify what might need to be changed or improved.
An updated 'block and stack' diagram will be issued in early 2027 when all the feedback has been considered.
The Emergency Department is at ground level 0 on French Avenue with drop-off and pick-up zones, waiting areas, ambulance bays, security and satellite imaging.

This level also has a connection to main entry level 1 so pedestrians arriving from the station, Metro or bus stop have easy access to the upper levels.

The main entry will have reception, retail services and cultural spaces.
It opens onto the generous and welcoming hospital plaza.
At level 1, there is ground level entry from Chapel Road for easy drop-off and pick-up, especially for people visiting the outpatient clinics on levels 1 or 2.
The discharge lounge (for people waiting to leave the hospital) is also located on this floor and will have convenient parking for pick-ups.

This level has a direct bridge link to the the multi-storey car park for easy access to the outpatient clinics.
The main Imaging department is also located on this level and will include x-ray, nuclear medicine and other services.

Level 3 will include the operating theatres and procedure rooms for surgical services, supported by Sterilising Services.
There will be a lift service between Emergency and Operating Theatres.

Patient meals will be delivered from the kitchen on level 4.
All 'back of house' services including food, linen and cleaning are supported by dedicated staff lifts and a staff corridor.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on this level will have a dedicated outdoor area.
Pathology is also located on this floor, along with the hospital's education and research centre, and corporate services.

Level 6 will include maternity and birthing as well as the Neonatal Unit (Special Care Nursery).
In the Pediatric Precinct inpatient and outpatient services for children and adolescents will provide a hub for younger patients.

Patient wards are located on the upper floors with views of the surrounding area and plenty of natural light.
This floor will include wards for stroke and rehabilitation as well as another inpatient unit.

Level 8 will have patient wards, including dedicated wards purpose-built for contemporary mental health care.

Three patient wards on this level would be for medical or surgical services.

Level 10 includes an Older Persons Dementia Care ward, aged health ward and another inpatient unit for medical or surgical.

Level 11 is the last clinical level.
This level includes the Bankstown Cancer Therapy Centre, a dedicated Palliative Care unit and other patient wards.
